COMPLETE January 2, 2026 (but will be updated as I fall in love with new songs)
UPDATES: A-C (June 21), D-E (June 24), F (July 4), G-H (July 6), I-K (July 13), L-M (July 19), N (August 16), O - Pearl Jam (August 23), the rest of the Ps (October 4), Qs (November 28), Rs (December 7), Ss and Ts (January 1, 2026), U through Z (January 2, 2026)
These are my favorites of all time (in no particular order). They are songs that I could put on repeat and listen to over and over:
- 10CC - "I'm Not In Love"
- 311 - "Down"
- 311 - "Amber"
- 311 - "Love Song" - Really good version of this song
- The 1975 - "Somebody Else"
- ABBA - "Knowing Me, Knowing You"
- Acoustic Alchemy - "Overnight Sleeper"
- Adam Ant - "Desperate But Not Serious"
- Adele - "Can't Let Go" (this is a Linda Perry song, which my closest friends will know is someone whose songwriting I normally loathe, but I absolutely love this song)
- Aerosmith - "What It Takes"
- Al Green - "Let's Stay Together"
- Alan Parsons Project - "Don't Answer Me"
- Alice in Chains - "Nutshell" (song hits me hard every time I hear it)
- Alvvays - "Dreams Tonite"
- America - "You Can Do Magic" (unlike Russ Ballard's normal songs. I was genuinely surprised when I found out he wrote it. Great stuff)
- Andy Burrows - "If I Had a Heart"
- Anita Baker - "Body and Soul"
- Arcade Fire - "Modern Man"
- Arcade Fire - "Suburban War"
- Arcadia - "Goodbye is Forever"
- Arcadia - "The Flame"
- Arctic Monkeys - "Knee Socks" (this is a unique, nutty song whose background vocals during the chorus by QOTSA's Josh Homme just make the nuttiness perfect)
- Athenaeum - "Flat Tire" (this poor band never did anything and should have, given the time they came out. They really wanted to be The Smithereens. The harmonies in the chorus always hit the right nerve in me)
- Avril Lavigne - "I'm With You" (I was already a fan of Lauren Christy's solo stuff from the early 90s and even more impressed when I realized she was one of the three in The Matrix, who produced this)
- AWOLNATION - "The Best"
- Band of Horses - "Infinite Arms"
- The Bangles - "Be With You"
- Barenaked Ladies - "Conventioneers" (I am not a huge Barenaked Ladies fan, but when they get it right, they nail it. The three songs on this list are guilty pleasures)
- Barenaked Ladies - "In the Car" (Love, love, love this song)
- Barenaked Ladies - "I'll Be That Girl"
- Barry Manilow - "Weekend in New England" (this song is immensely special to me, and those who know, know why)
- The Beaches - "Blame Brett" - You'll hear a lot of songs like this on this list. I am attracted to female-led pop/rock songs for some weird reason.
- Bear Hands - "Giants" and "Bone Digger" (a very unique band that was trying something new in a time when it pretty much all had been done. Love the attempt. If this had come out in the early 90s, they would have been much bigger.)
- The Beatles - "A Day in the Life" (my favorite song of all time...the ultimate Paul and John song)
- The Bee Gees - "Nights on Broadway"
- The Bee Gees - "New York Mining Disaster 1941)
- Beck - "Guess I'm Doing Fine" (when I do My Favorite Albums, "Sea Change" will be on it. It's a modern masterpiece from beginning to end)
- Bel Canto - "Unicorn"
- Better Than Ezra - "Overcome" (one of my all time favorite bands. I could put dozens of their songs on here)
- Better Than Ezra - "In the Blood"
- Better Than Ezra - "Rewind"
- Better Than Ezra - "WWOZ"
- Better Than Ezra - "Under You"
- Better Than Ezra - "Everything in 2s"
- Better Than Ezra - "Beautiful Mistake"
- Better Than Ezra - "Hey Love"
- Beverly Craven - "Promise Me"
- Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"
- Billie Eilish - "Wildflower"
- Billy Joel - "The Downeaster Alexa"
- Billy Joel - "The Stranger"
- Billy Squier - "In the Dark"
- Blake Babies - "Temptation Eyes"
- Blake Babies - "Out There" (very dated in early 90s sound, but classic)
- Blink-182 - "The Rock Show"
- Blondie - "Dreaming"
- Blue Murder - "Out of Love" (as far as power ballads go from 80's hair metal bands, this is the absolute best)
- Bobby Womack - "Across 110th Street"
- BoDeans - "Good Things"
- Bon Iver - "Holocene" (another on My Favorite Albums list. Perfection from beginning to end)
- Boston - "More Than a Feeling" (the double guitar in different octaves was a sound that was duplicated by many bands afterward and always sounds amazing. Ground breaking)
- Boygenius - "True Blue" (will also be on My Favorite Albums. A modern masterpiece)
- Boz Scaggs - "Lowdown"
- Boz Scaggs - "Look What You've Done to Me"
- Breaking Benjamin - "Breath" (Phobia will be on My Favorite Albums. Production perfection)
- Bright Eyes - "Hot Knives" (I always dug how Conor's vocals were produced on this song)
- Brothers Johnson - "Get the Funk Out Ma Face"
- Broken Bells - "Holding on for Life" (love how this song was produced...reminds me of old Bee Gees)
- Bruce Springsteen - "Hungry Heart"
- Bryan Adams - "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven" and "Do I Have to Say the Words?" (I put both of these songs together because, frankly, they are Mutt Lange specialties. I feel bad for Bryan Adams because, as much as he's a great artist in his own right, this album was Def Leppard redux, with these two songs easily substituting Bryan's voice for Joe. I know Bryan has been offended by the comparisons, but it's undeniable. That being said, I loved these back in the day)
- Bush - "Inflatable" (many wrote Bush off as Nirvana wannabes, but by the time Golden State came out in 2001, they were doing great songs like this one)
- Cage the Elephant - "Social Cues" (this band has gotten better with every album. "Social Cues" is a masterpiece and will be on My Favorite Albums)
- Cameo - "Candy" (I couldn't love this song more)
- Carly Simon - "You Belong to Me"
- Carly Simon - "Jesse"
- Carole King - "So Far Away"
- The Cars - "Drive"
- The Cars - "Let's Go"
- The Cars - "Magic"
- The Cars - "Shake It Up"
- The Cars - "Since You're Gone"
- The Cars - "Moving in Stereo"
- Cat Stevens - "Peace Train"
- Celine Dion - "Because You Loved Me"
- Celine Dion - "Dreamin' of You" (I was stunned when I found out this was written by Aldo Nova)
- Cheap Trick - "The Dream Police" (still a bad ass song)
- Childish Gambino - "Redbone"
- Chris Brown - "Under the Influence" (Chris may be a piece of shit, but this song is so damn good)
- Chris Isaak - "Wicked Game" (classic)
- Chris Rea - "The Mention of Your Name" (this song gives me chills)
- Christopher Cross - "Sailing"
- Christopher Franke - "Purple Waves"
- Chvrches - "My Enemy" (another flawless album)
- Cinderella - "Heartbreak Station" (love this song. Cinderella is one of the few bands from that era I still listen to)
- Circus of Power - "Needles" (a little known rock band from the hair metal 80s. Lead singer sounded like Jim Morrison)
- Clannad and Bono - "In a Lifetime"
- Cocteau Twins - "Fifty Fifty Clown" (another flawless album)
- Coheed and Cambria - "Feathers"
- Coheed and Cambria - "The Running Free
- Concrete Blonde - "Mexican Moon"

- Dwight Yoakam - "Ain't That Lonely Yet"
- Dwight Yoakam - "Fast As You"

- Enya - "Evening Falls"
- Ephraim Lewis - "Drowning In Your Eyes"

- Faith No More - "Zombie Eaters"
- Falco - "Jeanny"
- Falco - "Vienna Calling"
- Fall Out Boy - "Alone Together"
- Fergie - "Glamorous" (this one might surprise a lot of people, but as far as hip-hop adjacent tunes, I've always dug the groove of this. I even dig Ludacris' rap)
- First Aid Kit - "Fireworks" (I love these sisters so much. They can do no wrong in my eyes)
- First Aid Kit - "My Silver Lining"
- First Aid Kit - "Stay Gold"
- Firefall - "Just Remember I Love You"

- Fitz and the Tantrums - "Out of My League"
- The Fixx - "No One Has to Cry"
- The Fixx - "Crucified"
- The Flaming Lips - "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 1" (such a quirky song, but I couldn't love it more)
- The Flaming Lips - "Do You Realize?" (When I finally saw this live, it damn near brought tears to my eyes)
- Fleetwood Mac - "Dreams"
- Fleetwood Mac - "Rhiannon"
- Fleetwood Mac - "Sara"
- Fleetwood Mac - "Gypsy"
- Fleetwood Mac - "I'm So Afraid"
- Florence + the Machine - "Never Let Me Go"
- Florence + the Machine - "Only if for a Night" (one of my all time favorite songs)
- Foo Fighters - "Run" (I love Dave Grohl and have enjoyed Foo Fighters over the years, but I've always thought their songs were CLOSE to great, but never quite there...except for "Run" and "Everlong," which, to me, are perfectly constructed and executed rock songs)
- Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
- Foreigner - "That Was Yesterday"
- Foreigner - "Waiting for a Girl Like You"
- Foreigner - "Until the End of Time"
- Fountains of Wayne - "Radiation Vibe" (My absolute favorite guilty pleasure in music is the simple, catchy pop song. Weezer and Fountains of Wayne are pretty much at the top of that list of bands who execute it perfectly, so when Adam Schlesinger from FOW died prematurely as one of the very early public COVID deaths in April, 2020, we lost a pop song genius. His work on the songs on "My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" was next level greatness. Breaks my heart)
- Fountains of Wayne - "Troubled Times"
- Fountains of Wayne - "She's Got a Problem"
- Fountains of Wayne - "Barbara H"
- Fountains of Wayne (aka The Wonders) - "That Thing You Do" (for the movie, Adam wrote and pitched the song as a lark, and of course, his perfect pop sensibilities won the gig)
- Fountains of Wayne - "Stacy's Mom"
- Freedy Johnston - "Bad Reputation"
- Frida - "I Know There's Something Going On"
- Frightened Rabbit - "Woodpile" (the tragedy of Scott Hutchinson, the singer/songwriter of Frightened Rabbit, is so crushing to me that if I think about it for even a minute, I cry. He took his own life after a lifelong struggle with mental health which, ironically, led to some of the most incredible music of the past 2 decades)
- Frightened Rabbit - "Woke Up Hurting"
- Frightened Rabbit - "Get Out"
- Frightened Rabbit - "Backyard Skulls"
- Frou Frou - "Shh"
- Fuel - "Hemorrhage" (one of the few songs I believe is a perfectly constructed and executed song)
- Garbage - "A Cup of Coffee" (a band of uber musicians creating a constant collection of perfectly curated masterpieces. The list of Garbage songs that are part of my all time favorites should be a completely separate list as there are just so many. There are few artists/bands that are separated with a higher echelon of quality above most others that it almost comes across as embarrassing. Garbage is one of those few. They are a perfect band produced perfectly. They even released an album of covers in 2024 that were on my list of favorite songs from other artists, like "Starman" from Bowie, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" from U2, "Cities in Dust" from Siouxsie and the Banshees and "Love My Way" from the Psychedelic Furs. Clearly their taste is my taste completely)
- Garbage - "Milk"
- Garbage - "You Look So Fine" (Version 2.0 is a perfect album. I can turn it on today and am still blown away by the perfect grooves, lyrics, production and sequencing. I couldn't have ever thought of a more perfectly constructed example of my taste. Straight from my feels...let's pretend...happy end)

- Ghost - "Faith"
- Ghost - "Mary on a Cross"
- Ghost - "Kiss the Go Goat"
- Ghost - "From the Pinnacle to the Pit"
- Ghost - "Life Eternal"
- Girl - "My Number" - Brilliant glam/punk band that should have been huge, but its lead guitarist, Phil Collen, went on to be the lead guitarist for Def Leppard and the singer, Phil Lewis, left to the US to join former Ozzy guitarist Bernie Torme and eventually became the voice of LA Guns.
- Girl - "Hollywood Tease" - The punk/glam element of Girl fit perfectly with the first album by LA Guns, so having a version of this song on their debut was a perfect fit.
- Golden Earring - "Twilight Zone"
- Goo Goo Dolls - "Long Way Down" (back when they were actually a rock band)
- Goo Goo Dolls - "There You Are" (wayyyyy early rock from the boys from Buffalo)
- Gotye - "Heart's a Mess" (love everything about this song)
- Gotye - "Somebody That I Used to Know" (my friends love to tease me about this song because of what I did when I first heard the song, but in the end, I was proven right. I heard this song on an NPR show months before it was ever released. I was literally driving and pulled over to continue listening to it because it blew me away. It froze me in my tracks. Eventually the song ended up being one of the biggest hits of all time, going 9 times platinum and topping the charts in 20 countries. Enough that Gotye refuses to ever release anymore music under the Gotye name. It was structurally unique, brilliant and beautiful. Oddly enough, "Heart's a Mess" is equally as brilliant, showing he could continue to put out great music, but this song was just too much of a monolith to try and ever follow up. It became so ubiquitous that it doesn't seem as special as it really is)
- Grant Lee Buffalo - "Mockingbirds"
- Greenwheel - "Breathe" (I love what Melissa Etheridge did to this song, but the original is best)
- Gregg Tripp - "I Don't Want to Live Without You"

I even got her out of print Device and solo album when I went to Canada back in 1992. She is THE songwriter of the 1980s, having written many of the biggest hits of the decade, including "Love is a Battlefield" and "Invincible" from Pat Benatar, "The Best" and "Better Be Good to Me" from Tina Turner, "There's the Girl" and "Never" by Heart, and "The Warrior" from Patty Smyth/Scandal. A bucket list item for me would be to finally meet her.
- Holly Knight - "Sexy Boy"
- Holly Knight - "Baby Me"
- Holly Knight - "It's Only Me"
- Holly Knight - "Howling at the Moon"
- I Am Arrows - "Green Grass"
- Ides of March - "Vehicle" (I've always dug the groove on this song)
- Imagine Dragons - "Amsterdam" (the radio releases of this band kind of kick me in the crotch, plus I've always been irritated by what they did to Ryan Walker, but I've always loved this album track)
- Indigo Girls - "Closer to Fine" (some of the best harmonies ever)
- Indigo Girls - "Galileo"
- Injected - "Faithless" (totally dug the groove on this song)

- Iron & Wine - "Boy with a Coin" (this song is amazing)
- Iron Maiden - "Wasted Years"
- Iron Maiden - "Flight of Icarus"
- J. Geils Band - "Love Stinks"

- Jefferson Starship - "Count on Me"
- Jefferson Starship - "Runaway"
- Jefferson Starship - "Winds of Change"
- Jefferson Starship - "Be My Lady" (I became obsessed by Craig Chaquico on the Winds of Change album. The emotional guitar playing, pardon the pun, struck a chord with me. Still does. I loved this song so much as a kid)

- Keane - "Spiralling"
- Keith Sweat - "Twisted"
- The Killers - "Here With Me"
- The Killers - "Just Another Girl"
- Kingdom Come - "What Love Can Be"
- Kirsty MacColl - "Walking Down Madison" - Recorded in the prime Manchester Brit Pop era (yuck), so it has a Happy Mondays/The Farm feel, but hearing her sing is all I care about.
- Kirsty MacColl - "Perfect Day" - Love this version of the Lou Reed song.
- Kirsty MacColl - "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby" - From the movie, "She's Having a Baby," Kirsty had a long relationship with The Smiths/Morrissey/Johnny Marr and added so much to their music, so it stands to reason she would remake one of their greats.
- Kirsty MacColl - "Children of the Revolution" - Recorded with the brilliant guitar work of Johnny Marr, this is my favorite from Kirsty.
- Kirsty MacColl - "They Don't Know" - Yes...she wrote and recorded the original before Tracey Ullman turned it into a huge hit.
- KISS - "Forever"
- KISS - "Detroit Rock City"
- Kitchens of Distinction - "Drive That Fast"
- Kool and the Gang - "Get Down On It"
- Kool and the Gang - "Misled"
- Korn - "Coming Undone" - Anyone who knows me knows that I cannot stand most Nu Metal, specifically Korn. However, I was happy The Matrix got ahold of them and put out this more easily consumable version of Korn (see what I did there?). I actually really liked this when it came out.
- Korn - "Twisted Transistor" - More magic from The Matrix
- Krokus - "Screaming in the Night"
- Lady A - "Need You Now"
- Lady Gaga - "Monster"
- Lady Gaga - "Alejandro"

- LANNDS - "Metanoia"
- LANNDS - "Words"
- LANNDS - "Hourglass"
- The Last Shadow Puppets - "My Mistakes Were Made for You"
- Lauren Christy - "Steep" - This is an early 90s album by an AAA (Adult Album Alternative) artist, who was one of many fed to our radio stations that had cherry-picked songs that would meet our format for shows we had. This was one of those radio-friendly AAA songs that would never make top 40, but was perfect for our audience. I loved this album at the time as I was deep into this stuff. Strangely enough, Lauren would leave the solo artist world and create a production team of three called The Matrix, who would go on to produce huge hits by Avril Lavigne, Liz Phair and Korn, and even produced the first attempt at breaking out a 19 year-old Katy Perry.
- Lauren Christy - "The Rumour"
- Lauren Christy - "Vanessa's Father"
- Leatherwolf - "Thunder" - Definitely a sign of the times, but I really dug this back in the day
- Led Zeppelin - "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - One of my all-time favorite songs. I have this thing about songs that have slow, emotional starts, build up to these powerful crescendos, then drift away in a soft ending. Something about those structures pushes my buttons. Probably why I love "A Day in the Life" so much too.
- Leonard Cohen - "Everybody Knows"
- Leonard Cohen - "Hallelujah"
- Level 42 - "Something About You" - One of the most understated, underrated and talented 80s bands
- Level 42 - "Leaving Me Now"
- Level 42 - "Lessons in Love"
- Lifehouse - "Broken"
- Lifehouse - "Everything"
- Lifehouse - "Between the Raindrops"
- Lifehouse - "Runaways"
- Lifehouse - "Firing Squad"
- Lifehouse - "Somewhere In Between"
- Lillian Axe - "Voices in my Walls" - Say what you want about hair bands, and there were so many talentless posers during that time, but if you listened earnestly to the musicianship, vocals, etc., and one cared enough to explore that genre, there were a handful of immensely talented bands whose music carried through a deep catalog and has held up. Lillian Axe is one of those bands. Ron Taylor was one of the best vocalists from that era, and plays a local bar here in McKinney quite frequently. Steve Blaze is the musical brain behind the band and is the most underrated writer from that era. By the time they had recorded their final album with their main lineup, "Psychoschizophrenia," they had perfected everything about their sound. Unfortunately, that was 1993, knee deep in the grunge era. I always loved the construction and layers of this song.
- Lillian Axe - "World Stopped Turning"
- Lillian Axe - "Ghost of Winter" - I love the way Ron's vocals are produced on this.
- Lillian Axe - "Letters in the Rain"
- Lillian Axe - "Dream of a Lifetime" - Their first single from their first album. I bought this the day it came out from Record Bar in Monroe. I'd go up there on the day new albums came out and ask what new stuff came out, and this was one of them that day. I want to say Smashed Gladys and Badlands came out the same day (my timing may be off) and I bought all of them. But this was the one that blew me away.
- Lindsey Buckingham - "Trouble" - My hero...
- Lindsey Buckingham - "Go Insane"

- Lindsey Buckingham - "Countdown"
- Lindsey Buckingham - "You Do or You Don't"

- Liz Phair - "Supernova"
- Lone Justice - "Shelter"
- Lorrie Morgan - "Something in Red" - I always liked this when I was in country radio

- Lou Reed - "Perfect Day"
- Love and Rockets - "Jungle Law"
- Love and Rockets - "No Big Deal"
- Love and Rockets - "Bound for Hell"
- Love and Rockets - "Motorcycle" - Listen to early Marilyn Manson. He completely duplicated the music.
- Loverboy - "When It's Over" - Love this pure 80's song. Mixed by the great Bob Rock, which is why it has that great bass riff.
- Luther Vandross - "Here and Now" - I still love this song, as dated as it sounds. There was a period in my young adulthood when I listened to this kind of adult contemporary and R&B almost exclusively.
- Madonna - "Live to Tell"
- Madonna - "Oh Father" - The "Like a Prayer" album is a masterpiece
- Madonna - "Dear Jessie"

- Men At Work - "Overkill"
- Merchants of Venus - "Say Ahh"

- Metallica - "The Unforgiven II"
- Metallica - "Nothing Else Matters"
- Metallica - "Fade to Black"
- Metallica - "The Memory Remains"
- Metallica - "Until It Sleeps"

- Metric - "Black Sheep"
- Metric - "The Shade"
- Metric - "Cascades"
- Metric - "The Governess"
- Metric - "Breathing Underwater" - Such a great song. If you listen to enough of the songs in this long list, you'll hear so many artists and songs that sound like pop, female-led brilliance, just like this. Emily Haines is a goddess.
- Metric - "Synthetica"
- Metric - "False Dichotomy"
- MGMT - "Kids"
- MGMT - "Time to Pretend"
- Miami Sound Machine - "Falling In Love" - Always loved this song.
- Michael Bolton - "Said I Loved You...But I Lied" - Yet another song that sounds a tad cheesy and unlikely to be a hit, but Mutt Lange made it one.
- Michael Bolton - "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You"
- Michael Jackson - "Rock With You"
- Michael Jackson - "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)"
- Michael Jackson - "Smooth Criminal"

- The National - "Fake Empire" - I give my brother credit for sharing this band with me in 2007. He wanted to go to their concert at the Granada Theater on September 14, 2007. They were practically unknown, but not nearly as unknown as their opener, a very new St. Vincent, still Dallas' own then. That concert was one of my cherished memories as it was artists in the infancy of their existence. St. Vincent was the craziest thing I'd ever seen. She was a one-woman band with a giant collection of instruments strapped to her. She went on to indie royalty, as did The National, whose Aaron Dessner went on to co-write and produce some of the best music from Taylor Swift, Frightened Rabbit, Gracie Abrams and Ed Sheeran. I only wish I'd taken video of the show. My memory only gets me so far.
- The National - "Mistaken for Strangers"
- The National - "Start a War"
- The National - "Bloodbuzz, Ohio"
- The National - "Sea of Love"
- Ned's Atomic Dustbin - "Happy" - In the strange genericness of the early 90s between the end of hair bands and the advent of grunge, you had a ton of bands, many from the UK, trying a million of different things to see what would stick. Ned's Atomic Dustbin had the odd configuration of two bass players (which seems ridiculously unnecessary), but they took guitar pop to a weird new place. At least for a short time.
- Ned's Atomic Dustbin - "Grey Cell Green"
- Neil Diamond - "Love on the Rocks" - For most Neil fans, this is probably blasphemy, but it holds a special place in my heart for a couple of reasons. One, Jazz Singer was one of the first movies I saw on HBO when we moved to Tulsa, OK and got cable for the first time. I watched it many times. I loved that soundtrack. I loved the scenes watching him record his albums. Stuck with me. Second, this was the first song I couple-skated with a girl I liked in Tulsa. So ridiculous for a 4th grader, but the older one gets, the more memories like that make you smile.
- Neil Diamond - "Hello Again" - This is so beautifully recorded. Not an element that isn't perfectly performed. Neil's voice is perfect.
- Neil Diamond - "Kentucky Woman"
- Neil Diamond - "September Morn"
- Neil Sedaka - "Laughter in the Rain" - Shut up. Yes, I like this.
- Neil Young - "Southern Man"
- Neil Young - "Only Love Can Break Your Heart"
- Neil Young - "Heart of Gold"
- Neil Young - "Alabama"
- Neil Young - "Old Man"
- Neil Young - "The Needle and the Damage Done"
- Neil Young - "Sample and Hold" (I love the live version more, though, with a full band.)
- Neil Young - "Wonderin"
- Neon Trees - "Sleeping with a Friend" - A fantastic pop song
- Neon Trees - "Lessons in Love"
- The New Basement Tapes - "Kansas City"
- The New Basement Tapes - "Nothing to It"
- New Order - "Regret"
- The New Pornographers - "Dancehall Domine" - Neko Case and company are some of the most consistently unique and prolific songwriters. And the sound is so full, bombastic and well-produced. I should be deeper into their catalog than I am. Perhaps over time I will be.
- Nicky Holland - "Ladykiller (featuring Lloyd Cole)"
- Nicky Holland - "Colouring Blue"
- Nicky Holland - "This Town"
- Nirvana - "Breed" - This is absolutely the best song on "Nevermind" and rarely gets its due, so instead of putting obvious songs on this list for which Nirvana is known, I'm only listing the under-appreciated ones that slipped through the cracks. Nirvana was a good band, and hit like a nuclear bomb when they broke, but in the grand scheme, I would always wonder if they would have maintained relevance or just faded away. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and the like stuck around a long time and are still beloved, so maybe Nirvana would have too, but given the limited catalog from them, most of it has already been so heavily played, that they lost their luster with me over time. Most of "Nevermind" is a tired album.
- Nirvana - "Drain You"
- Nirvana - "On a Plain"
- Nirvana - "Something in the Way"
- Nirvana - "Scentless Apprentice" - For "In Utero," Kurt wanted his love of early Pixies albums to come across more than the "polished" "Nevermind" did. This song is a perfect example of the sound he wanted to be known for, which is a carbon copy of Frank Black's band screaming/screeching "surf punk" sound. So, naturally, it made sense to bring in Steve Albini to engineer it.
- Nirvana - "Milk It" - My favorite song on "In Utero." I think it captures exactly what Kurt wanted to be. It has a Nirvana edge with a strong Pixies influence.
- Nirvana - "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" - More pure Pixies-influenced power grunge
- Nicolette Larson - "Lotta Love"
- No Doubt - "Looking Hot" - This was the last single they released (at this writing), and my favorite song off "Push and Shove." I've never been a ska fan, so I always loved how they moved farther and farther away from that sound. This album should have been huge as it was brilliantly pop-produced and positioned for greatness. It wasn't to be after the original video for this song kind of "cancelled" the band because of its perceived appropriation of native American culture.
- No Doubt - "Undercover"
- No Doubt - "Undone" - They should have released this song.
- No Doubt - "Ex-Girlfriend"
- No Doubt - "Bathwater" - This heavily ska-influenced, but I thoroughly enjoy it. Gwen is unbelievably sexy in the video.
- No Doubt - "Spiderwebs" - Also heavily ska-influenced, but I love this song.
- No Doubt - "Hey Baby" - Just dig it...and Gwen looks amazing.
- Noah Gallagher's High Flying Birds - "Everybody's on the Run" - I am a casual Oasis fan. Only like a few things, actually. But Noel's solo stuff is amazing. This album was near perfect. I saw this tour and it was such a great show. Fuck Liam.
- Noah Gallagher's High Flying Birds - "If I Had a Gun"
- Noah Gallagher's High Flying Birds - "AKA...What a Life"
- Nothing But Thieves - "Real Love Song" - I stumbled upon this band looking for something new and there were a couple of songs from them that just blew me away. The lead singer's voice is phenomenal, especially live. Incredibly soulful when the song calls for it. They write great pop songs, but throw in a mix of hard songs too, which throws me a off a bit in understanding their identity. They've got a tremendous talent, though. I caught them in concert on the DCC tour, but wasn't a fan of the DCC album. They played the older songs I liked, though.
- Nothing But Thieves - "Free If We Want It" - This is the song that sold me. The live version is even better. It's got a vibe like it's a song from The 1975. Absolutely amazing song.
- Nothing But Thieves - "Before We Drift Away"
- Nothing But Thieves - "Overcome"
- Oasis - "Supersonic"
- Oasis - "Don't Look Back in Anger"
- The Ocean Blue - "Between Something and Nothing"
- The Ocean Blue - "Ballerina Out of Control"

- Olivia Newton-John - "Hopelessly Devoted to You"
- Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark - "(Forever) Live and Die"
- Orden Ogan - "In the Dawn of the AI"
- Our Lady Peace - "Somewhere Out There" - I could put the entire "Gravity" album from 2002 on here because it's near perfect, thanks to Bob Rock. I listened to this album repeatedly during 2002.
- Our Lady Peace - "Innocent"
- Our Lady Peace - "Made of Steel"
- Our Lady Peace - "All For You"
- Our Lady Peace - "Heavyweight" - This song is phenomenal. This band never got its due.

- Ozzy Osbourne - "Miracle Man"
- Ozzy Osbourne - "Mr. Crowley"
- P!nk - "Try"
- P!nk - "Trustfall"
- Panic! at the Disco - "Ballad of Mona Lisa" - I enjoyed the unique theater of early Panic! at the Disco, but they really hit their stride when Brendan Urie took it over and involved Butch Walker. Their "Vices and Virtues" album was their peak. Once Butch was out of the producer's chair, Brendan twisted the sound into boring nonsense. At least he was smart enough to kill the band.
- Panic! at the Disco - "Ready to Go"
- Panic! at the Disco - "Girls/Girls/Boys"
- Panic! at the Disco - "This is Gospel"
- Panic! at the Disco - "Nine in the Afternoon"
- Paramore - "Misery Business" - Paramore, specifically Hayley Williams, is near the top of my list of most talented young bands since 2000. Hayley blows my mind. An incredible voice, songwriting, attitude and it has only improved as she has grown from the young teen who wrote and sang this very song to all the others I'm going to list here. It makes sense that she and Taylor Swift are such good friends. They are both the best in the last 25 years.
- Paramore - "That's What You Get"

- Paramore - "Decode"
- Paramore - "Emergency"

- Pearl Jam - "I Am Mine"

- Pearl Jam - "Dance of the Clairvoyants" - I absolutely love this song and love the PJ did something like this. It's a large maturity step.
- Pearl Jam - "Superblood Wolfmoon"
- Pearl Jam - "Wreckage" - The farther PJ gets from the grunge era, the better they get. Good stuff.
- Pearl Jam - "Dark Matter"
- Pearl Jam - "Running"

- Placebo - "Without You I'm Nothing" (a perfect song. And if you like it, listen to the version of it they did with David Bowie, it's good too. He loved this song. I would have killed to be at this show) - I listed almost the whole album. It's perfect.
- Placebo - "Pure Morning"
- Placebo - "Brick Shithouse"
- Placebo - "You Don't Care About Us"
- Placebo - "Ask for Answers"
- Placebo - "Allergic (To the Thoughts of Mother Earth)"

- Placebo - "Scared of Girls"
- Placebo - "Summer's Gone"
- Placebo - "Burger Queen"
- Placebo - "Taste in Men"
- Placebo - "Special K"
- Pleasure Thieves - This is the only link I could find for this obscure band. The album is SO 90s, but very good for the time. The song I wanted to feature was "Pictures of Madness," which I believe is the 7th or 8th song and starts at the 16:20 mark.
- Plumb - "In My Arms"

- The Pretenders - "Tattooed Love Boys"
- The Pretenders - "Brass in Pocket"
- The Pretenders - "Talk of the Town"
- Prince - "The Question of U" - While not my all-time favorite Prince song, it's one that is obscure enough that it was one he almost never played live. He did a tour in the early 90s in Europe only called The Nude Tour where he played it and I was upset that for a decade after that, he played practically nothing from the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack because of what a big bomb it was. When I finally saw him on a large stage for the Musicology tour in 2004, I was shocked and so overwhelmed, I literally cried that I was experiencing it, as silly as that sounds. Knowing he never played on any other tour after that, or before, then died in 2016, I am so immensely grateful I got to hear it live. One of the best nights of my life.
- Prince - "Thieves in the Temple (the extended version)" - 12" extended/dance mix versions were a big thing in the 80s and early 90s, specifically on vinyl. Prince did a TON of them. Thieves is a decent song, but the extended version was MUCH better. There's a whole set of extra lyrics that make it better, to me, so I am adding that version here. I will do the same with Partyman.
- Prince - "Partyman (the extended version) - See previous song.
- Prince - "Girls & Boys"
- Prince - "U Got the Look"
- Prince - "Alphabet Street"

- Prince - "If I Was Ur Girlfriend" - (one of my top faves)
- Prince - "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
- Prince - "Anna Stesia" - Like "The Question of U," this song is one of those very obscure deep cuts that I wanted to hear live so much. Luckily (again), I attended the "One Nite Alone" tour. It was a night of his jazz material, but then he played a couple of catalog items at the end, "Anna Stesia" being one of them. Another beautiful night.

- Public Image Limited - "Disappointed"
- Pulp - "Common People"
- Quarashi - "Stick Em Up" - I dug the groove on this back in the early 2000s, but it hasn't aged well. I'm not sure why I thought an Icelandic Nu Metal/Rap group of nerdy white guys wanting to channel Beastie Boys with Limp Bizkit would age well, but...
- Quarterflash - "Harden My Heart" - I loved this group. Hate that they never went very far. I loved Rindy Ross' voice and sax
- Quarterflash - "Find Another Fool"
- Quarterflash - "Take Me to Heart"
- Queen - "Killer Queen" - I recognize the greatness of Queen, and there are songs I enjoy from them, including the overplayed "Bohemian Rhapsody." However, this one I've consistently loved everything about this song. From beginning to end, it's magical.

- Queens of the Stone Age - "Emotion Sickness"
- Queens of the Stone Age - "The Way You Used to Do"
- Queens of the Stone Age - "My God is the Sun"

- Queens of the Stone Age - "First It Giveth"
- Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"

- Queensryche - "Eyes of a Stranger" - This song still holds up, as does "Empire"...and they were from Seattle. Perfect transition band from hair metal to grunge.
- Queensryche - "Empire"

- Slaughter - "Real Love" - This was at the very end of hair metal, but a well produced Dana Strum tune that was reminiscent of their Vinnie Vincent "All Systems Go" sound, which I was a huge fan of those first two Vinnie Vincent albums.
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "Siva"
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "Zero" - When this was out, I wanted to be in a band that sounded exactly like this song. I couldn't have loved it more. The guitar work was magical.
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "Ava Adore"
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "The Everlasting Gaze" - MACHINA/The Machines of God is one of the best albums in the last 40 years, and by far the Pumpkins best. I could put every song from it on here. The rhythmic magic of Jimmy and D'arcy is peaked on this album.
- The Smashing Pumpkins - "Raindrops + Sunshowers"

- Splender - "Yeah, Whatever" - A perfect album. Produced by Todd Rundgren. However, as talented as the singer/songwriter who led this group is, his experience with Todd and on the second album turned him off from music all together. He's in filmmaking now. Such a waste of musical talent.
- Splender - "I Don't Understand"

- Stryper - "Calling on You" - Considering I'm an atheist, it might seem strange that I have so many Stryper songs on my list. Well, I'm a sucker for the double-guitar sound, ala Boston (with which Michael Sweet ended up touring about 15 years ago), Robert is a great drummer, and their melodies are consistently high quality for that genre of music. The harmonies and musicianship sucked me in, independent of the messages.

- W.A.S.P. - "The Idol" - Blackie Lawless had his silly moments in the hair metal days, but is genuinely one of the most talented, underrated artists from that era. "The Crimson Idol" is a perfect album. Ozzy hated him, but Pete Townshend loves him. They are one of the few bands from that era to which I still listen. While the themes from his 80s songs represent the debauchery of the times, musically, Blackie stood apart from that era. The sheer structure of "The Crimson Idol" was the representation of his pure talent, all culminating in "The Great Misconceptions of Me," which combined all of the other songs on the album into one cohesive song. Still blows me away.
- W.A.S.P. - "Hold On To My Heart"
- W.A.S.P. - "Thunderhead"
- W.A.S.P. - "Sleeping (In the Fire)"
- W.A.S.P. - "Wild Child"
- W.A.S.P. - "L.O.V.E. Machine"

- Weezer - "Perfect Situation"
- Weezer - "This is Such a Pity"
- Weezer - "The Damage In Your Heart"
- Weezer - "Freak Me Out"
- Weezer - "American Gigolo" - Every song from "Maladroit" should be on here as it is a perfect album, and oddly enough, the two best from Weezer were produced directly by them: "Maladroit" and "Pinkerton." They should stick to that. The albums are harder and more punk.
- Weezer - "Dope Nose"
- Weezer - "Keep Fishin'"
- Weezer - "Take Control"
- Weezer - "Slob"
- Weezer - "Burndt Jamb"
- Weezer - "Space Rock"

- Weezer - "Can't Stop Partying"
- Weezer - "Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori"
- Weezer - "(Girl We Got A) Good Thing"
- Weezer - "Wind In Our Sail"
- Weezer - "El Scorcho" - As mentioned above, "Pinkerton" is at the top of the Weezer catalog with "Maladroit." Both are hard, more punk, edgier, heavier drums, deeper Drop D sound, but both albums vary strongly with how that Drop D sound interacts with bass as Matt Sharp was still with the band on "Pinkerton."
- Weezer - "Pink Triangle" - Probably my favorite Weezer song
- Weezer - "The Good Life"
- Weezer - "Tired of Sex"

- The Young Veins - "Change" - Ryan Ross and Jon Walker from Panic! at the Disco left the band to the direction Brendan Urie wanted to go and took "their" sound to this short-lived band. This one and only single was pretty darn good. Ryan's been inactive since the COVID pandemic. I hate that. I would have liked more of the Young Veins.
- Yungblud - "Zombie"
- ZZ Top - "Sleeping Bag"
